The results of a study on quantitative and qualitative distribution of charophytes (Charales) in the Volyn Polissia lakes are presented. A general list, made up on the base of summarized published and original data, includes 17 species belonging to the genera Chara L. (13), Lychnotamnus (Rupr.) Leonh. (1), Nitella C. Agardh (2) and Nitellopsis Hy (1). The number of the Charales species in the investigated lakes varied from one to 11, on average 2–3 per lake. The most frequent are Ch. delicatula (51,9%), Ch. fragilis (48,1%), Ch. aculeolata (40,7%), Ch. aspera (29,6%), rarely Ch. contraria (22,2%) and Nit. obtusa (14,8%). The rest ones were found only in a few lakes. The species composition of Charales of the Volyn Polissia lakes was compared to those of some European lake groups situated within the bounds of a forest zone and revealed its originality.
