The review deals with the main mechanisms of switching between proliferation and differentiation of different cell types of living organisms. The emphasis is on genetic mechanisms controlling proliferation and differentiation as well as the role of cellís membrane potential changes in cellís ability to switch from proliferation to differentiation.

Keywords: proliferation, differentiation, genetic controlling systems, transmembrane potential
